Purebredbreeders.com | Different Types of Service and Working Dogs

Purebredbreeders.com has opted to look at service and work dogs this week. Canines have been a part of human life for centuries whether they were untamed or pampered princes and princesses. In fact, many have been bred as a fashion statement of their time, for sacred duties (some shrouded in myth and legend), and as a way of marking social status. A more noble role, however, is that of the working dog. Many breeds that are simple pets today were initially raised to work on farms, with fisher people, to guard people, or even to protect ancient and valuable possessions. Today, many function as service dogs and workers that contribute so much to our quality of life. Here are just some of the roles dogs play:

Purebredbreeders.com service dog

Service Dogs

These range from those that help the mentally and physically impaired, to those used for school programs. These dogs help individuals who have limitations, boost self-esteem, help with conflict resolution lessons, and a host of other tasks. Dogs are becoming a bigger part of many behavioral modification processes, and these are proving successful.

Therapy Dogs

Dogs are now used to treat some conditions. Depression and related issues are common on this list, but there are a number of other things that we may not think about. Overall, having a dog has been proven to help relieve stress, reduce depression, help children with Autism, as well as ADHD and related or similar conditions. They also help with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity both in terms of the emotional and the physical benefits.

Police Dogs

A lot of dogs are used to confront suspects, guard their human handlers, and keep our streets safe. This is a dangerous job that requires a certain level of training and mental maturity so it is a tall task for anyone, or any dog. Some breeds are more suited to this type of work, but as a Chihuahua in Japan proved, any dog that can be trained is a valuable asset.

Detection Dogs

These differ from police dogs due to the nature of their job. They are used to sniff out bombs and other threats. Their keen sense of smell also comes in handy for tracking things or people.

Search and Rescue Dogs

Dogs are an important part of many search and rescue teams. Their “super” scent detection, great hearing, and tracking abilities make them perfect for it. They can also get into areas humans cannot, which is great for getting supplies to people who need it.

Military and Navy Dogs

There are many dogs in the army and navy. Many are working dogs, but some provide the therapeutic benefit of interacting with a dog during high stress periods. This is one of the reasons service people tend to bond so much with their canine partners.

The overall list of jobs dogs do is far too extensive to note here. However, Purebredbreeders.com hopes that an important point has been made. Dogs do more than just entertain and guard us at home, they are out in the field being heroes. Granted, there are many everyday heroes that go unsung. This is all the more reason to treat each pooch we come across with the best possible care, you never know when he or she will have to come to the rescue.

Purebred Breeders | NY Animal Protection Bill To The Rescue

Purebred Breeders NY animal bill

Purebred Breeders is pleased to know that a new animal protection bill is currently on its way to the Assembly after being passed by the New York Senate. The bill which was successfully tabled less than a week ago automatically makes animal theft a class E felony in the state, which imposes stricter penalties on those caught. The bill comes on the heels of alarming increases in pet theft throughout the US.

The exact statistic is unknown, but Purebred Breeders understands that January to July of 2011 alone saw a 49% jump in these case when compared to the same period as 2010. This is mainly from the database of the American Kennel Club with some media reports. However, not much was being done due to the nature of these crimes. In fact, many owners across the country feel they were not even taken seriously when they made their missing pets reports.

Why Animal Theft Was Difficult To Prosecute

Felony larceny in the state of New York occurs when the value of the property stolen is at least $1,000. The problem with this is that the true value of pet is hard to establish for several reasons. Although many pedigree and show dogs will cost much more, the actual value is still considered hard to define because these are living, breathing beings that form an important part of their owners’ lives. Therefore, not many cases were followed up or sufficiently tried. To make matters worse, most missing pets were never returned. The new law will consider the monetary value of the dog, as well as the emotional value placed on it by the owner. The offense will also be seen as grand larceny.

Purebred Breeders could not agree more with a statement made by the bill’s sponsor; Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset). According to Marcellino: “Dogs and cats are stolen and sold for many reasons: dog-fighting, puppy-mills, prey for exotic animals and fur for clothing and accessories. Our pets are a loving, vital part of the family.”

He then goes on to state “It is impossible to place a dollar value on the love and companionship provided by our pets. Those who cruelly steal pets for heinous purposes deserve to be tried and convicted of a felony.” We applaud the Senator and all those involved for the bill’s success to date.

Purebred Breeders hopes the bill (referred to as “S.946″) comes into full effect, and that it serves as a deterrent to unscrupulous persons who believe that: 1. it is okay to take what is not theirs; and 2. It is okay to treat animals however they want. We also wish to see it adopted elsewhere. Luckily, the bill will protect licensed pets on a whole, not just dogs. Purebred Breeders strongly urges our NY readers to ensure that their pets are licensed so that this new bill can protect you and your pooch.

Purebred Breeders LLC | Doggie Language: Lili Chin Breaks The Code

Dog art is always refreshing, no matter the form. This is why it is so popular and can be appreciated by even those who would never opt to actually own dogs. While Purebred Breeders LLC loves seeing dog art in general, pieces that contribute to the welfare of real life canine companions, or help their owners understand them more are at the top of our list. This is why we are especially taken with Lili Chin and Boogie’s work. Both Chin and Boogie (her Boston Terrier) are gaining a lot of positive buzz for a number of drawings featuring the pooch. The one we are particularly amused by presents a great way of improving communication between dogs and their humans.

Purebred Breeders LLC doggie drawingsThe Great Decoder

It’s something that many dog owners laugh about; an easy way to tell exactly what their dogs are saying. In fact, Purebred Breeders LLC often wonders what dogs are thinking as they look at their clueless humans hoping they will eventually realize the simple message being sent, only to be greeted with “What is it boy?” or “What’s the matter girl?” Many dog-related sources have addressed the issue, but Purebred Breeders LLC has never seen it put in such an entertaining, simple, concise or adorable way!

Lili Chin (with the help of her “celebrity” Boston Terrier) has made life easier for the visually stimulated, as well as those of us who just do not want to read a couple hundred words to find out what our pooches are trying to tell us. Chin’s latest portfolio called “Doggie Drawings” features several posters, with her “Doggie Language” featuring 25 positions, expressions, reactions, or stances and what they mean. Part proceeds from the work will go to a Southern Californian Boston Terrier rescue named “Boston Buddies”. Purebred Breeders LLC encourages you to support the cause if you can, see http://doggiedrawings.net/ for more details.

Purebred Breeders LLC Asks: Should Animal Abuse Offenders Keep Their Pets?

Purebred Breeders LLC dog 1With the wrap up of a Louisville, KY case involving an animal hoarder, the question begs to be asked: “Should persons accused of animal abuse be allowed to keep these animals?” Comments on the news story have ranged from anger, to concern, irritation, and disappointment. The case is not rare; there are many instances in which people have too many animals in deplorable conditions, but Purebred Breeders LLC finds this one rather tragic for many reasons.

The Story

It is December 2011 and a mobile home is found somewhere on Kentucky’s Highway 55 located in Henry County with some 200 animals. The owners; Kenneth and Terri Smith, have horses, rabbits, hermit crabs, some 40 cats, and more than 100 dogs. The home is so rundown, yet it houses both the couple and the animals living inside (most lived outdoors though), prompting 200 charges of animal abuse. While Purebred Breeders LLC is sickened by the ordeal the animals had to endure, we must pause and express our condolences to the now widowed Terri Smith whose husband allegedly took his own life shortly after the fine.

Mrs. Smith pleaded guilty to one count of animal abuse and was facing a monetary fine, jail time or house arrest, and the possibility of keeping her two favorite dogs as well as a horse. Her outcome was made known today. Although unclear if she will spend time in jail or under house arrest, it is clear that she will have to pay the county restitution ($9,600), and will get to keep the three animals. The others will be sold by the county to recover a portion of the money she now owns.

What Prompted The Debate

One of the dogs Mrs. Smith wanted to keep is a Spaniel now named Moto by her motorcross-loving foster family. The family; a couple and their three boys, were heartbroken by the news that she had requested to get this particular dog back. Sympathizers who supported their refusal to give her back willingly all weighed in on numerous sites, and Purebred Breeders LLC found that most (if not all) the responses reflected a common theme. The need for better animal protection laws to prevent persons accused of animal abuse from getting them back, as well as laws limiting the number of pets that hoarders are allowed to own.

While we here at Purebred Breeders LLC found some of the responses downright mean since hoarding is in fact a psychological condition that should be treated and not ridiculed.. We also agree that there should be stricter laws governing the treatment of all animals right across the country. We commend states, county, cities, that have made strides in this area, and can only hope that others follow soon.

Good News For Moto

Moto will not be returned to Mrs. Smith, and will instead remain with her foster family for now. She will legally become a part of the family if they have things their way, since the wrapping up of the case clears the way for this to take place. Purebred Breeders LLC wishes everyone involved the very best, and hopes that the other animals will start receiving the love and care they deserve. We also hope Mrs. Smith will receive all the help she needs, especially for the sake of the animals returned to her.

6, 144 Dogs Rescued In One Weekend | Purebred Breeders LLC

Purebred Breeders LLC is a sucker for great stories and happy endings. So what could be more pleasing than the tale of more than 6000 unfortunate canine companions finding new homes, and getting a new lease on life? We are sure there is an answer to that question, but we can think of nothing for now. Our last post looked at a shelter dog named Mabeline, today’s story may not be about an heroic dog, but it does involve shelters as well.

A Tale of Second Chances

Dog shelters make the news practically everyday; some stories are good and some are bad. As far as Purebred Breeders LLC sees it, few are as epic as the one many now share, thanks to the ASPCA’s first ‘Mega Match-a-thon’ held over the Easter week-end. The effort which saw 53 communities coming together led to second chances for some 6,144 dogs who would more than likely have met a far less desirable fate. The effort was a collaboration of 224 groups that focus on animal welfare who made the best of a $492,250 grant from the ASPCA.

Awesome stories about a shelter running out of dogs and closing early; a 96 year-old lady showing that you are never too old to help a dog or make a difference; record breaking days for several shelters; shelters breaking their own daily records in just a few hours; and even the adoption of a blind shi tzu by a local soldier will no doubt make their own appearances in places where they matter. For now though, the dog-loving community is looking at the feat in a broader sense, which means combining each of these accomplishments to measure ASPCA’s success.

Purebred Breeders LLC can only hope that each of these dogs has found loving, permanent homes, and will never have to worry again. We know those who contributed to the efforts are happy with the outcome, and the new owners now have eager, loving additions to their families. We also hope to see this record is broken next year, and for more groups to follow suit. Dogs love unconditionally, let us love them back as much.

Purebred Breeders LLC | Mabeline: The Unlikely Superhero

This one is a little old, but when it comes to dogs and heroics, Purebred Breeders LLC knows no boundaries! When most people volunteer at a shelter they do so because they want to help the animals there. It’s about what they can do for those in need, and few worry about the direct benefit to them. Imagine if your love for a dog you barely even know pays off so tremendously that it will forever impact your life! That is the case of a 17-year-old volunteer from St. Petersburg.

Purebred Breeders LLC Mabeline Friends of Strays

The Canine Behind The Experience

Mabeline is relatively small, a true sweetheart, and a stray at an animal shelter called Friends of Strays. The Rhodesian Ridgeback mix was being walked by the young volunteer earlier this year when the 17-year-old was attacked from behind. The attacker, a registered sex offender who has since been caught, had her on the ground before she was even fully aware of what was happening. What he did not count on was Mabeline’s reaction. The “absolute sweetheart” stunned everyone who knew her by facing the assailant. She was able to frighten him away by growling and barking with her teeth bare. Hardly considered the guard dog type, Mabeline proved to an unlikely hero.

Today, both the teen and the dog have a better “story to tell” about that day. The 17-year-old may be a shaken from the experience, but it is a lot better than it could have been, and she will always have fond memories of Mabeline. As for her hero? Mabeline was adopted shortly after by a woman who had not yet learned of her heroic deeds. The new owner is now beaming with pride from knowing that she didn’t just save a dog, she saved one that truly deserved a second chance. Purebred Breeders LLC wouldn’t have it any other way.

There are a number of things to be happy about here. Firstly, a young girl is spared an ordeal and her attacker has been held accountable. Secondly, a brave stray is now in a loving home, and has been recognized for her good deed. Last, but not least, we here at Purebred Breeders LLC are touched by the existence of Friends of Strays. We also commend everyone who works with these dogs, and thank them wholeheartedly!

Purebred Breeders LLC Sends Praises to Kilo The Superdog

Many of us see tendencies in our dogs that tell us he or she will spring to our aid no matter what the situation. We also know in our hearts that even the most docile of canines are protectors by nature. However, we luckily have never had the chance to see how right we are, and Purebred Breeders LLC is sure we all want to keep it that way. There are, unfortunately, times when there is no choice. Times when our trusty canine companion is thrust into action because he or she senses our danger. That is exactly what has propelled a loyal pit bull from Staten Island to “hero status”.

Purebred Breeders LLC Kilo

How The Story Began

The pit bull named Kilo and his owner 32-year-old Justin Becker came face-to-face with a criminal posing as a delivery man on March 31st around 5pm. The perpetrator knocked on Becker’s apartment door claiming to have a package, then tried forcing his way inside. Becker reacting swiftly knocking the intruder to floor, then used the door to wedge him in a bid to keep him there. This is where Kilo comes in. The dog, sensing his owners’ danger, stuck his head out the door at the intruder, resulting in a gunshot at point blank range. Luckily, the bullet was deflected by his skull, and made its exit through the neck.

The Good News

Brave Kilo is still alive today, something the vet who attended to him calls a “one in a million” chance. This “very lucky” dog is now home resting (on doctor’s orders), and currently wears bandages rightly decorated with a superhero sign, thanks to the great staff at the South Shore Animal Hospital (New Dorp). He will have to take his fair share of antibiotics and painkillers, but this is the best news possible in such a situation. Purebred Breeders LLC is relieved to know that no serious damages were done, and Kilo will be back to his old heroic self in no time.

Purebred Breeders LLC hopes no dog ever has to undergo this and understandably so, but it warms our hearts to know that a brave dog like him is able to enjoy his days. We know Kilo’s owner (who rushed him to the hospital refusing to let his friend die) will never forget his act. We can just see those doggy treats piling up already!
