DOGTV is a new cable channel meant just for dogs.  The San Diego channel is designed to reduce stress and give the dog some company while you are at work or away.  And the content really is geared towards the animals, using colors that dogs see best like yellow, green, dark blue and purple.

The channel has three main purposes, stimulation, relaxation and exposure.  Stimulation is to encourage playfulness which can include a dog playing with a toy or butterflies flying around.  Meanwhile relaxation serves to soothe them with classical music and pastures.  Exposure, our personal favorite, serves to introduce and accustom the dog to everyday situations or factors that may cause them stress.  These factors can include crowds, a vacuum cleaner, or a toddler who is extremely close.

A community campaign created by dog owners, officially named Dogs Against Romney has taken an active part in bringing attention to the issue of responsible dog ownership and appropriate means for dog travel.

On February 11, Saturday Night Live showcased a sketch of a Mitt Romney impersonation.  Towards the end of the sketch, ‘Romney’ is interrupted repeatedly by a dog, to which he says “Do you want to go back on that roof?”.   Read this article for background information on the roof story.

On February 6, a driver who is part of the Dogs Against Romney protest movement was pulled over for having a roof-mounted dog carrier on his car.  The driver was pulled over for suspected animal abuse after calls were made to the authorities of a dog who was crated on the roof of this person’s car.  A video of the police stop has gone viral and the ‘dog’ on the roof was actually a stuffed animal but it served to illustrate how “incredibly dangerous, outrageously insensitive — and even illegal” transporting a dog in this way is.

The Super Bowl equivalent to the dog world is the Westminster Dog Show in New York, which is a two-day event that took place February 13^th through the 14^th.  Dogs and dog owners rallied outside of the venue with signs that read ‘I Ride Inside’, ‘Mitt is Mean’ and ‘Dogs aren’t Luggage’.

The Dogs Against Romney campaign has shirts, bumper stickers, car magnets, and dog apparel to continue to rally support.

Purebred Breeders found this new story recently, and it’s certainly a very fun one!  Ed Trimmer, a Kansas state representative introduced a House bill proposing to make the Cairn Terrier Kansas’ official state dog, which is the same breed that played Toto in The Wizard of Oz.

It all started with Mitt Romney and a controversial event involving the family dog.  In 1983, Romney tied up their dog Seamus’s kennel to the top of their vehicle and drove 12 hours to Canada with the canine on the top of their car.  Though Romney states that the dog enjoyed it up there and it is where the dog preferred to be, there is a claim that the stress caused the dog to suffer from diarrhea over the course of the trip.

The law for acceptable pet transportation varies by district.  In Miami-Dade County it states that it is only illegal to transport a dog in an open-bed truck if the dog is not confined or restrained, the law also provides that it is fine to have a dog loose inside the cabin of a car.

Many animal advocates have been appalled upon hearing this news, calling the Republican candidate ‘insensitive’ as many are attesting that animals should ride inside a car and with a pet seat or a dog safety belt to protect them in the event of an accident.

Purebred Breeders took notice that a photo was released on the White House’s Flickr account and was tweeted by David Axelrod, an aide to the president, with the subtle statement “How loving owners transport their dogs” on January 31.

In 2008, when running as a Presidential candidate, Democrat Barack Obama pledged to not only be president to the American people, but to the animals as well.  He stated at a town hall meeting, “I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other. And it’s very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals.”  His supporters are no doubt trying to sway animal right activists away from Republican Romney in the event that he does become the Republican candidate.

It is natural to bring up the opponents political history or questionable morals, but can their dogs play a part in who wins this race?  We have yet to see, but what is undeniable is that their dogs could sway dog-lovers to vote one way or the other.

Uggie, an incredibly talented movie dog, who had an entire internet campaign dedicated to having the dog considered for an Oscar, is retiring!  The dog who starred in The Artist is ten years old, which means he’s in his 70s in terms of dog years!

His appearances at the Golden Collar awards and the Oscars seem like they will be his last major appearances in the Hollywood life.

Uggie will most likely still be doing short films or commercials but his presence in full-length movies will be no more.  His trainer says that he would not want to put him through long hours anymore.  His Hollywood career almost didn’t happen though, Uggie was rejected by two owners before being sent to a pound, where he was adopted by Trainer Omar Von Muller.

His brother, Dash seems to be on the same acting road so though we may be seeing the last performances by Uggie, we still have another dog we can love!

The campaign encouraging this is called ‘Consider Uggie’, and you can find them on both Facebook and Twitter, as they motivate the inclusion of Uggie’s achievements amongst the February 24 Oscar awards that are to take place in Los Angeles.

“He is a real actor, I don’t care what anybody says. He deserves an Oscar more than anybody I know,” said Oscar Von Muller, a supporter of the movement.  It is speculated that The Artist is aimed to take best picture at the Oscars.

Like anyone, Purebred Breeders LLC is excited for the Super Bowl this year, but as commercials are concerned, there is one big change we weren’t expecting.

Skechers is planning on featuring a whole different kind of celebrity this year for its Super Bowl commercial.  The footwear company, which used Kim Kardashian for a steamy commercial last year in which she fires her trainer for her Skechers shoes, is opting for a French bulldog this year instead.  The Skechers-wearing French bulldog will be racing a group of greyhounds for the commercial to highlight the company’s GOrun shoes, part of their new high-tech line.

Purebredbreeders.com reviews current events on this blog and there is an increasing trend in couples who are deciding to include all of their family members in their wedding ceremonies, including their pets!  While there is an increase in pets in general being wedding participants, be they birds, cats and even horses, the most common participant is our favorite four-legged friend, the dog!

Although there can be variables that may occur that cannot be accounted for when including your dog in your wedding ceremony, many couples say the memories are well worth it.  The recommendation however, is that if this is something you are considering that your dog be properly trained to eliminate the possibility of it running away, chasing a guest or being distracted as it makes its way down the aisle.

Understanding your dog’s temperament will dictate the extent to which it is involved in the wedding, and if it is a wise choice in including the animal at all.  Also, during the ceremony, the bride or groom should not be responsible for the animal, assign someone to look after the dog during the event, its feeding, walking, etc.

Many pet boutiques also now carry make shift tuxedos or veils for your furry companion so accessorizing your pet for the occasion will not be difficult.

Additionally, if you are set on having your dog be the ring bearer, place fake rings on its pillow or collar instead of the authentic rings.  In the unforeseen event that the dog runs away or decides the rings are a tasty looking treat, it won’t be running away with thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry.

This week a dog became a hero when his actions saved three lives from a burning house.  Bear, the goldendoodle, according to his family, never barks but in the middle of the night he began barking awaking everyone in the house.  His owner and the two children were able to evacuate the premise without harm.

Their neighbor, firefighter Rodney Nutter, saw the ignited home and ran in to see if anyone was still inside.  When he saw that everyone was safe, he went back in several times more in an attempt to save some of their Christmas presents.  The family is staying at a hotel for now and Bear is staying at a neighbor’s home.

Dog is nominated for National Hero Award

It has been just recently that dogs have been contracting the influenza virus, the first flu appearance in dogs first occurred in 2004 and is believed to have stemmed from a mutated flu virus that jumped species from horses to dogs.  Since its first appearance in dogs, the virus has been confirmed in 38 states.

Symptoms are similar to those in humans and can include a cough, runny nose and fever or breathing problems if it is a severe case.

People are not susceptible to catching the canine flu, but they can facilitate its spread through their clothing.  The dog flu can also be transmitted through water bowls, toy and dog accessories so try to avoid the sharing of these things between dogs, particularly if the other is a strange dog belonging to another family.

Due to it being a very new virus still, most dogs have not built up immunities to it and will fall sick.  Fatality rates are estimated between 5% and 8% of affected dogs.  A flu shot for dogs has recently been released, it is a combination of two shots spaced a few weeks apart costing between $25 to $60.

Purebred Breeders suggests vaccinating your dog, because like in humans, prevention is the best policy.
